“I am continually inspired by the Strangeways Ensemble. They provide a platform within the creative arts to represent people with a disability. The show’s themes of inclusion, representation on the big screen and following your dreams are powerful and emotive. I also enjoyed the strong musical component of the show – the live music and singing, an exciting change since their last show I saw, Trash Talk (2020)… this show is thought-provoking and powerful in its concepts. It had drama, comedy, emotional and an intriguing use of technology. I highly recommend this show.” Alex Dawson, The Illawarra Flame September 2023

SOMETHING THAT HAPPENED by The Strangeways Ensemble

Produced by Merrigong Theatre Company in association with The Disability Trust

Premiere season 15 - 23 September 2023

Inspired by the history of representation of people with disability in film, Something That Happened is a thought-provoking, funny and imaginative exploration of the quest for fame and inclusion.

The Ensemble are busy preparing for their next cabaret when an audition opportunity is shared on their online group chat. An international film company is looking to cast a new film version of John Steinbeck’s classic tale Of Mice and Men. This could be their big break, a chance to hit the big time, and for their dreams to come true!

Set in the rehearsal room, the ensemble undertakes their audition prep with individual research, self-tapes and throwbacks to the Golden Age of Hollywood as Steinbeck’s themes of friendship, dreams and our place in the universe are put to the test.
